Aspen Times Weekly: ‘Telluride Bluegrass Festival: Forty Years Of Festivation’

Aspen was quite strange and wild in 1974, but not unusual and pretty wild to host what would become the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, according to Pastor Mustard.

In "Telluride Bluegrass Festival: Forty years of Festivation," festival emcee long and Aspenite Dan "Pastor Mustard" Sadowsky calls the people of San Juan resort in the "Goldilocks Zone Championship crazy" for what is the natural home for the meeting of galvanizing flat collectors and people who love them.

"Even Aspen was too established to accommodate what this festival was to become (and Aspen was a monster parade)," he writes.

The concise narrative Sadowsky irreverent, often hilarious, comments - familiar to "festivarians" and listeners of his weekly radio KAJX - help bring history to life festival feet stomping in this retrospective elegant design. Sadowsky delightfully gives readers with tales of backstage, onstage and beyond musical with a cast of characters including Bill Monroe, Martin Sexton, John Hartford, David Byrne, Emmylou Harris and others, to try to capture the magic and the phenomena of the festival as "the march of the canvas," the "House Band", the "Festivarian" and its amazing growth.

The book includes a chorus of voices from the festival along with Sadowsky. There is a foreword by Sam Bush, short essays by artists such as Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck and Marikay Shellman (widow of the founder of the festival, Fred Shellman), with an afterword by Chris Thile of Nickel Creek.
It is a book coffee table with beautiful photographs of past festivals and reprints of his posters of each year, along with lists of perfomers of each excursion, in themselves, pulse accelerate any music fan.

Book design and layout are certainly gorgeous, and limited to 5,000 copies first impression is aimed at collectors and hardcore festivarians. The stories of the stage and behind him, however, deserve a wider audience - hopefully (? Perhaps by the 50th) Sadowsky can put together an oral history to capture the festival and its seismic cultural impact with a lower price and larger print run.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival: 40 Years Of Festivation

Planet Bluegrass will mark the 41st edition of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival this summer coffee table book with a limited edition collection.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival: 40 Years Festivation is a volume of 216 page hardcover full of high resolution photographs , artists Telluride trials identified , and year after year the accounts of the festival from 1974 onwards .

Lead author of the book is the longtime festival MC, Pastor Mustard (Dan Sadowsky), in collaboration with Sam Bush, Chris Thile, Bela Fleck, Emmylou Harris, Winston Marshall (Mumford & Sons) and many others. Over 350 photographs adorn its pages, including images from Telluride city as a pioneer of the 19th century, images of every conceivable aspect of the party until the current day. Several are full page or double truck.

The input of each year includes a list of artists, the promotional poster of the festival, a lot of snapshots of the stage and grounds, and a reminder of Sadowsky. An example follows:

6The Telluride Nitty Gritty Dirt Band appeared in ‘86, with its colorful costumes Nudie Cohen and large white hats. I am amazed at how many musicians came to Bluegrass music through a 1972 double album, Will the Circle Be Unbroken by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Nick Forster of Hot Rize admitted, for example.

In the early eighties NGDB established his headquarters in Aspen, so it was altogether fitting and proper that must wander Telluride. NGDB was also one of the groups that started as a jug band, except with people like Jackson Browne and Bernie Leadon of the Eagles. Clock Works universe Dirt Band tangentially engaged with events in the mechanism of TBF. They were a great act - rather, until one night in June 1986 from its many incarnations, the line that night with Jimmy Ibbotson is still my favorite. .

Festivation 5,000 copies of the book will be printed, and initially offered only during the festival. Planet Bluegrass announced ways to get a copy if any remain after. No price has been announced for the book.

The Telluride festival has grown so much during those 40 years that the city, primarily a ski resort and tourist destination, Planet Bluegrass required to limit the number of tickets sold to ensure that the roads and the services of former mining community can handle visitors.

Tickets are still available for the event June 19-22 this year, although it is usually sold out by the time of the festival.

Town Approves Temporary Ropes Course Near Lift 4

Their new summer attractions are likely to come to the mountain village, as the city has given approval for a temporary ropes course near Lift 4.

The course is part of an effort to Telluride Ski & Golf Company to bring more activity to the heart of the village, and is provided in place until August. The ropes course will be suspended above a small pool on a deep foot having many intended uses. Although the board gave unanimous approval during a conditional use permit Thursday that had some questions about your setup, security and location.

Council Member Cath Jett expressed concern about the proximity of the course to mountain bike trials in the area and the potential impacts to mountain bikers. Telski asked to consider alternative locations. However, Scott Butler with Gravity Play (the company that will install and operate the course) I told the Council that the proposed location was chosen because it is near the core of the village and the floor is level in that area.

“I’m not against [the course], I just want it to be as successful as possible," said Jett. “Having to close it because we have an unfortunate accident would not be good. But I think it would be great if you could look at [a place 50 meters away] to the future."

Jett finally gave motion to approve the permit as presented with the condition that the barriers semi - permanent got to separate the public from the customers safety ropes course.

According to city documents, the course will be about 20 feet wide and high and 40 feet long. Although an exact location near Lift 4 has not been decided in the course will open just before the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in mid-June and will run daily from 10 to 6 pm until 15 August.

The attraction features the use of harnesses to navigate many obstacles. The pool below involves plastic balls that people can use to enter and walk on water. To use the course will cost around $ 15 per person.

Telski is providing a location and attraction marketing and according to a press release, everything will be linked to a new Adventure Center of the town, which is also located near the base of head 4.

According Telski, one of his goals is to increase business in the heart of the village. The company is playing with many different ideas to try to bring people to Mountain Village and make sure they have a good time in summer and winter.

Photos: Here's What Planet Bluegrass Looks Like Today, Eight Months After The Flood

It is what it looked like six months ago, we can assure you.

Planet Bluegrass is a place that has a special significance, not only for fans - queuing days before time for the annual festival of the hacienda RockyGrass - but the artists who play there. In part this is due to its location: Beside a wall of the cliff and the St. Vrain River in Lyons.

But, of course, which laid the foundations of several meters under water last fall, when the historic flood surpassed much of the city. You can see how it was on September 12 in a series of videos on YouTube - We have incorporated a continuation.

But now, eight months after the flood, the place is half way through a massive reconstruction. It will hold its regular music festivals and private events program this year. We went to see the progress which earlier this week and took some photos to show. There is still a long way to go, but Planet Bluegrass looks to be ready for the thousands of people who already have tickets for RockyGrass in late July.

When the floods came last year, the main channels of water flowing through the entire facility, destroying several buildings and other seriously harmful.

The water rose so suddenly that Planet Bluegrass, an organization that runs the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, in addition to the events on his own property, lost most of their equipment from computers to memorabilia to develop audio settings.

Still, due to ticket sales for festivals are as strong as or stronger than they have been, the place will survive. There are still plenty of other businesses and residents of Lyons who need more help, financial and logistical; Planet Bluegrass asks that anyone interested in contributing to these efforts are directed to the website of Lyons fights where you can find various opportunities for giving and volunteering. You can also contribute to the Lyons Community Foundation.

The reconstructed area in front of the stage has fewer trees and now has a slight degree of improve sight lines.

The Wildflower Pavilion had to be completely rebuilt. Has moved a couple of meters away from the river.

The massive concrete silo survived, like two trees growing within it.

Back To Basics

La Marmotte chef and owner Mark Reggiannini bring a taste of Telluride to Billings, Mont. next week when shows her skills to a small group of about 30 attendees of a cooking demonstration at the home of Montana State University Wine and Food Festival.

Reggiannini show attendees how to make fondues, oysters, smoked trout, beet salad, and juniper crusted elk loin with mushrooms and warm molten chocolate cake with blueberry ice cream. The party event - like dinner will also feature wine pairing.

Attendees will also receive the ingredients and instructions on how to make each dish for amateur cooks can recreate at home. His menu reflects the cuisine in his restaurant La Marmotte Telluride, something he calls the French Alps.

"I tried to do things that are pretty basic," said Reggiannini . “Porcinis are something that can be found in the mountains in the summer. Elk and game are something that people associate with come and eat here. "

Reggiannini said tickets for the May 14 event sold out in an hour. He is flying on May 12 with one of his cooks and hopes the festival will help theirs and La Marmotte name in the world of foodies.

Reggiannini Mairen Reagan and his wife have owned La Marmotte for the past 11 years, taking over from a French couple who previously owned it. The restaurant has been in Telluride for 27 years, still retains a traditional French flavor, but with a modern twist. Reggiannini short heavy creams and dairy products often make French food feels too heavy, but keep cooking techniques.

The restaurant is known for its prix fixe menu, where $ 50 will get you three courses including dessert. The menu changes almost every night, depending on what is fresh and seasonal.

"We continue to adapt and change things forever," said Reggiannini. “I think the food is a bit like the fashion in which changes a lot and you just have to keep up with what's going on.”

But Reggiannini, who studied at the Culinary Institute of America and has worked at Jean Georges Vongrichen Mercer Kitchen, is really a traditionalist at heart. You like preparing meals simple and straightforward: braised beef short ribs, coq a VIN, lamb crusted with parmesan, grilled mahi mahi.

And as he has gotten older, said he has negotiated Reggiannini nights out to fancy restaurants for the simple goodness of street food. On a recent trip to Belize, said the best meal I had was not at the resort, but the jerk chicken from a roadside stand.

It also rejects fashioned method " sous- vide " employed by many high volume fine dining restaurants where food is sealed in airtight plastic bags and cooked for a long time at low temperatures, then a couple of seconds is given on the grill before they are served to customers. Neither is a fan of food science and molecular gastronomy, which investigates chemical transformations of ingredients and their effects on finished products.

"It's like chemistry," said Reggiannini. "Many of the things in the world of pastry made their way to the more traditional kitchen ... We are here.”

Nathan And The Zydeco Cha Chas To Play Missoula Roots Fest

“Roots music " is a broad term and the two headliners for River City Roots Festival this year show how wide it really is.

This year , mandolin player Sam Bush will headline performance Saturday 23 August, Nathan and Zydeco Cha Chas and play Aug. 24. As always, Roots Fest is held in downtown Missoula and is free.

Bush is recognized as one of the founders of the progressive bluegrass style called newgrass.

"He had a band called New Grass Revival, which completely revolutionized bluegrass and Americana music," said Ellen Buchanan, who has booked Roots Music Fest for nine years.

“Sam is amazing live. It's a lot of fun. It's one of the best artists in the business in my opinion," he said.

In addition to his skills on the mandolin, also plays the violin, and has earned a reputation as the "king" of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

In 2009, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award American Music Association. His most recent album "Circles around Me" was No. 3 on the list of American bluegrass.

Bush has collaborated with numerous artists over the years, including Emmylou Harris, Bela Fleck, Lyle Lovett and David Grisman .

***

Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Cha , meanwhile , are " the best band in the country doing zydeco music, in my opinion," Buchanan said.

Williams raised Criollo cha chas and were included in the Music Hall of Fame in 2005 Louisiana. Williams was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Association of Music Zydeco. Often plays Jazz Festival New Orleans, and has played the festival in Butte.

Williams has been playing the accordion for more than three decades, and his bandmates as brother Dennis Williams on guitar and his cousin Mark Williams (aka " Chukka ") on the rub board.

Buchanan said they are a high-energy live act that will continue so long as people are dancing.
"And live, you know crank exponentially," he added.

That sparks of energy and is very appealing demographic you look for when soliticiting bands to play the festival.

They want to expose people to music they might otherwise not see and help keep American lives, while stressing the city and culture of Missoula.

The other acts still to be announced. But Buchanan planning a theme every night - bluegrass and newgrass acts on Saturday, and New Orleans funk, R & B and Friday.

Roots Festival attracted over 15,000 people last year.
The two-day festival also features a juried exhibition of art, a four km of competitive fun , fun family festival in Caras Park career and a food court 15 - Ryman Street vendor .

The 2014 event will also include a competition stand -up paddleboard, to be held in the Clark Fork River.

Telluride Colorado - Not Just a Bluegrass Festival

Every year Telluride Colorado attracts thousands and thousands of fans who love bluegrass music, the summer season and the city it. Telluride Bluegrass Festival set yearly by Planet Bluegrass began in 1974 and attracted a little more than 1000 participants. In recent years, the cap limit participants of the festival was set to 10 000 people. People love this event because they are actually able to camp in the city park. The trick is to look online at the beginning because the lottery is often closed for several months before the event takes place. This event is for people of all ages, and is not to be missed if you are in the area in the middle or at the end of June.

What you may not know is that Telluride is known for this magnificent event. Telluride is certainly a city of 4 seasons with more emphasis on summer & winter activities. In winter, skiing is world-class in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. In summer you can enjoy miles of pristine waters rafting or fishing. Spring and fall are usually a little less busy, but it is also the best time to get deals on accommodation in large hotels.
